Petroleum Engineering roadmap
Reservoir, drilling and production engineering.
Start with Petroleum Foundations, follow the steps in order, then build a project, prepare for interviews and earn your certificate.
Foundations
- Petroleum Foundations — Where oil and gas come from. The petroleum system and value chain, oil and gas units, and the rocks, minerals and geological structures that form traps.
- Reservoir Characterisation — How much is there?. Porosity, permeability, saturation and PVT, volumetric reserves, SPE-PRMS classification and material balance.
- Drilling & Wells — Making a safe hole. Exploration drilling, in-situ stresses around wellbores, and drilling engineering with mud, casing and well control.
Core skills
- Production & Facilities — Reservoir to surface. Pipe flow, inflow and outflow performance, nodal analysis, artificial lift, and the pumps and compressors of surface facilities.
- Reservoir Management & EOR — Forecast and recover more. Radial flow, well testing, decline curves and simulation, then waterflooding and enhanced oil recovery.
Advanced
- Refining & Midstream — Crude to products. Distillation theory and columns, catalysis, refinery conversion units, pipelines, LNG and the energy transition.
- Process Safety — Preventing major accidents. HAZOP studies, explosion hazards and hazardous-materials handling in oil and gas operations.
