Industrial Engineering roadmap

Operations research, quality, supply chain and lean manufacturing.

Start with Foundations: Productivity, Work & People, follow the steps in order, then build a project, prepare for interviews and earn your certificate.

Foundations

  1. Foundations: Productivity, Work & People — Measure, improve and humanise work. What industrial engineers do, productivity and capacity measures, method and time study, and ergonomics and human factors for safe, efficient work.
  2. Probability & Statistics for IE — The language of variability. Descriptive statistics, probability, continuous distributions, sampling and hypothesis tests, and regression — the foundations of forecasting, quality and simulation.

Core skills

  1. Operations Research — Optimisation, networks, queues and simulation. Linear programming, classic OR models, graphs and networks, queueing theory for service design, and Monte Carlo and discrete-event simulation.

Advanced

  1. Production Planning & Facilities — Forecast, stock, schedule and lay out. Demand forecasting, inventory models and safety stock, production planning, MRP and scheduling, and facility layout with assembly-line balancing.
  2. Quality Engineering — SPC, capability and Six Sigma. Statistical process control, reliability and design of experiments, then process capability and the DMAIC improvement roadmap.
  3. Lean & Supply Chain — Flow, pull and networks. Lean manufacturing and the Toyota Production System, then supply-chain management, the bullwhip effect, network design and logistics.
  4. Engineering Economics — Is it worth the investment?. Time value of money, NPV, IRR, payback, depreciation, break-even and comparing alternatives.
