Embedded Systems Engineering roadmap

Microcontrollers, RTOS, communication protocols and device drivers.

Start with Embedded Foundations, follow the steps in order, then build a project, prepare for interviews and earn your certificate.

Foundations

  1. Embedded Foundations — What embedded systems are and how processors work. The big picture: what makes a system 'embedded', real-time and resource constraints, the development workflow, microcontroller basics and processor architecture fundamentals.
  2. Embedded Programming: C, C++ & Assembly — The languages that talk to hardware. C essentials for firmware, register-level Embedded C with volatile and bit manipulation, memory maps and linker scripts, modern Embedded C++, and reading/writing ARM Thumb-2 assembly.
  3. Microcontroller Families — ARM Cortex-M, STM32, AVR, PIC and ESP32. The ARM architecture and Cortex-M profile, STM32 in depth, classic 8-bit AVR and PIC devices, and ESP32 wireless MCUs — how to choose and program each family.
  4. On-Chip Peripherals & Interrupts — GPIO, timers, PWM, ADC, DAC, DMA, interrupts and clocks. Programming the hardware inside the MCU: GPIO, timers and counters, PWM, ADC/DAC, DMA, the NVIC and interrupt design, clock trees, reset and watchdogs, and register-level peripheral programming.

Core skills

  1. Communication Interfaces — UART, RS-232/485, SPI, I²C, CAN, LIN and Ethernet. Every bus an embedded engineer meets: an overview of protocols, UART with RS-232 and RS-485, SPI, I²C, CAN and LIN vehicle buses, and embedded Ethernet with TCP/IP.
  2. Firmware Architecture & System Software — Structure, startup, drivers, bootloaders and power. How professional firmware is organised: architectures and state machines, the boot sequence with HAL and BSP layers, device drivers, bootloaders and firmware updates, and low-power design.
  3. Real-Time Operating Systems — Scheduling, kernels and synchronisation. RTOS fundamentals and rate-monotonic scheduling, kernel internals (TCBs, context switching, PendSV, stacks), and inter-task communication and synchronisation with queues, semaphores and mutexes.

Advanced

  1. Debugging & Testing — JTAG, SWD, GDB, scopes, logic analyzers and HIL. Finding and preventing bugs: JTAG/SWD debug interfaces, GDB and HardFault analysis, oscilloscopes and logic analyzers, and unit, integration and hardware-in-the-loop testing.
  2. Sensors, Actuators & IoT — Connecting firmware to the physical world and the cloud. Interfacing sensors and actuators to microcontrollers, signal conditioning, drivers for motors and relays, and building connected IoT devices.
  3. Secure & Linux-Based Embedded Systems — Security, secure boot and embedded Linux. Advanced platforms: threat modelling, secure boot and signed updates, key storage and hardening, and embedded Linux with device trees, drivers and build systems.
  4. Automotive Embedded Systems — ECUs, AUTOSAR, diagnostics and functional safety. Embedded engineering in vehicles: ECU design, AUTOSAR, on-board diagnostics and UDS, ISO 26262 functional safety, ASPICE processes, instrument clusters, gateways, automotive Ethernet and ADAS.
