Vibration & Airblast

Blasts shake the ground and air, affecting neighbours, structures and pit walls. Learn peak particle velocity (PPV), scaled distance and site laws, maximum instantaneous charge, damage and comfort limits, airblast (overpressure in dB), flyrock, and monitoring with seismographs.

Only a small part of explosive energy breaks rock — the rest becomes ground vibration, air overpressure, heat and noise. Communities near mines and quarries are sensitive to vibration, so regulators set limits (typically 5–25 mm/s depending on structure and frequency).

An analogy

Blast vibration is like ripples from a stone thrown in a pond: bigger stones (more charge per delay) make bigger ripples, and they fade with distance.

What controls vibration

Charge detonating at the same instant (per 8 ms window), distance, geology and confinement. Vibration is reduced by fewer kilograms per delay (smaller holes, decking, electronic timing), not by reducing the total blast size.

Site laws

Monitoring many blasts at different distances gives a regression of PPV versus scaled distance; design uses the 95 % confidence line. Frequency matters: low frequencies (< 10 Hz) are more damaging to houses (USBM RI 8507, AS 2187, DIN 4150 limits).

Airblast and flyrock

Airblast comes from unconfined gases (short stemming, face bursts, detonating cord on surface). Typical limit 115–120 dBL at houses. Flyrock is the most dangerous hazard — controlled by adequate burden and stemming, and exclusion zones (often 500 m for people).

Signature hole analysis

Recording one hole's waveform and superimposing it with different delay timings predicts the vibration of full blasts and finds timings that cancel dominant frequencies — enabled by electronic detonators.

Formulas

Worked example: Predict PPV

Given: W = 80 kg/delay, D = 300 m; K 1140, β 1.6

Find: PPV.

Answer: 4.1 mm/s — below a 12.7 mm/s limit

Worked example: Maximum charge per delay

Given: D = 300 m, limit 12.7 mm/s

Find: W_max.

Answer: ≈ 325 kg per delay
