Swift Evolution, Version History and Best Practices
57.1 Swift Evolution
Language changes go through the Swift Evolution process: pitch on the forums → proposal (SE-NNNN) → review → decision by the Language Steering Group / Core Team. Track them at swift.org/swift-evolution.
Upcoming feature flags let you adopt future behavior early (.enableUpcomingFeature("...")). Language modes (Swift 5, Swift 6) let modules migrate independently.
57.2 Version History Highlights
Error handling (throws), guard, protocol extensions. Open source (2.2).
API design guidelines, the "Great Renaming," SwiftPM Codable, key paths, multi-line strings
ABI stability, Result, raw strings Module stability, opaque types (some), property wrappers, function builders (SwiftUI)
async/await, actors, structured concurrency if let x shorthand, some parameters, any, Regex, primary associated types
Macros, if/switch expressions, parameter packs, noncopyable types, C++ interop
Complete strict concurrency checking in Swift 5 mode Swift 6 language mode (compile-time data-race safety), typed throws, Swift Testing, noncopyable generics, Int128, Embedded Swift, Synchronization (Mutex/Atomic), static Linux SDK, pack iteration
Trailing commas in more places, nonisolated on types/extensions, improved diagnostics, package traits
Approachable concurrency (default MainActor isolation option, nonisolated(nonsending), @concurrent), InlineArray, Span, opt-in strict memory safety, WebAssembly support, raw identifiers, Subprocess package
57.3 Best Practices Checklist
✅ Follow the Swift API Design Guidelines (clarity at the point of use, fluent naming, lowerCamelCase members, UpperCamelCase types).
✅ Prefer let, value types (structs/enums), and immutability. Use final for classes not designed for inheritance.
✅ Handle optionals safely (if let, guard let, ??). Avoid ! except for programmer guarantees.
✅ Use protocols and generics (some) for abstraction. Use any only for heterogeneity.
✅ Model state with enums (associated values) to make invalid states unrepresentable.
✅ Use Swift Concurrency (async/await, actors) over callbacks/GCD. Adopt the Swift 6 language mode and fix concurrency diagnostics.
✅ Break retain cycles ([weak self], weak delegates). Watch long-lived closures and tasks.
✅ Throw errors for recoverable failures. Use precondition for programmer errors. Add context to errors.
✅ Write tests (Swift Testing). Document public APIs with DocC. Format/lint in CI.
✅ Keep the minimum access level necessary (private by default for implementation details).
❌ Avoid massive view controllers/views. Extract components and models.
❌ Avoid force casts (as!), force tries (try!), and implicitly unwrapped optionals in general code.
❌ Don't block the main thread or the cooperative thread pool with synchronous waits.
❌ Avoid premature use of unsafe APIs and custom operators.
