Quality Control

Quality control makes sure what's built matches specifications. Learn QA vs QC, inspection and test plans, material testing (concrete cubes, slump, steel, soils), statistical acceptance criteria, control charts, non-conformance, and ISO 9001 quality management.

A beautifully designed structure is only as good as its construction. Weak concrete, misplaced steel or poorly compacted fill can cause failures years later. Quality systems catch problems while they can still be fixed cheaply.

Quality assurance plans how work will be done right; quality control checks that it was.

An analogy

QA is the recipe and the chef's training; QC is tasting the dish before it leaves the kitchen.

QA, QC and the ITP

The quality plan and inspection & test plan (ITP) list every activity, the standard it must meet, test frequencies, who inspects, and hold/witness points where work cannot proceed without approval.

Material and workmanship tests

Concrete: slump, temperature, cubes/cylinders at 7/28 days; steel: mill certificates, tensile and bend tests; soils: field density (sand replacement, nuclear gauge) vs Proctor MDD; bitumen and aggregates; dimensional checks, cover meters and non-destructive tests (rebound hammer, UPV).

Statistical acceptance

Concrete strength varies naturally; codes accept a batch if the mean and individual results meet criteria relative to f_ck. Control charts track results over time to catch trends before failures.

Non-conformance and QMS

When work fails a test: raise a non-conformance report (NCR), investigate root cause, decide disposition (accept, repair, reject), and take corrective action. ISO 9001 quality management systems, audits and continuous improvement (PDCA, Six Sigma) institutionalise quality.

Formulas

Worked example: Concrete acceptance

Given: M25, s = 4 MPa; Four results: 28.5, 31.0, 27.0, 30.5 MPa

Find: Accept or reject?

Answer: Accepted

Worked example: Field compaction

Given: Field dry density 1.76 g/cm³; Proctor MDD 1.85 g/cm³, spec ≥ 95 %

Find: Relative compaction.

Answer: Passes (just)
